Paving the way to 5G: the role of SDN and NFV

The networked society of today and tomorrow requires fast, reliable and ubiquitous networks, capable of seamlessly supporting a large variety of services and media. 5G promises to address this issue with an innovative and comprehensive architecture spanning from the radio interface to the core network functionality. The success of 5G is bound to a very high degree of flexibility, control, reconfiguration capability that may adapt the network to the changing user requirements and operator service paradigms. Virtualized technologies are the innovative key to the achievement of these goals and the Software Defined Networking (SDN) concept for the control plane as well as the Network Function Virtualization (NFV) approach to the flexible deployment of network components are the most significant candidates to this end.

This talk will introduce the basic principles of both SDN and NFV presenting an example of implementation in a real environment based on the OpenStack cloud management platform, and will explain why SDN and NFV may leverage on each other to achieve very flexible and proactive network control and management. Examples of dynamic adaptation of the Virtual Network Functions to the changing network conditions will be discussed as key to understand the functional split of the overall architecture.

FRANCO CALLEGATI is associate professor of telecommunication networks at the University of Bologna. His research interests are in the field of teletraffic modeling and performance evaluation of telecommunication networks. He has well established research expertise in optical networking, optical packet and burst switching, software oriented networking, network function virtualization and network security. He has been active in EU- funded research projects since 1994 leading activities and workpackages. He chaired or co-chaired several conference in the field of Telecommunication and co-chaired the Education Committee of the IEEE SDN Initiative. Since 2013 he is Director of the Center for Industrial Research in ICT at the University of Bologna.
