MT A452 Complex Variables II


This section of the course (Spring 2004) meets MWF 12:00-12:50PM in Ritter Hall 218.

General Description

A solid foundation in complex variables is essential preparation for both pure and applied mathematicians. For those interested in graduate study in mathematics, this course will introduce you to a field that lies at the crossroads of many active areas of modern research. For engineering students there will be applications galore. Those with a classical bent will likely find the subject's 18th/19th century roots and rich history appealing.

The prerequisite for this course is MT A451 (Introduction to Complex Variables).

Textbook Information

The required text for the course is Visual Complex Analysis by Tristan Needham. He maintains a web page for the book as well. Students can buy the book from the SLU Bookstore.

Homework and Exams

There will be some homework problems every week, unless otherwise indicated. Here is the latest homework assignment. You are encouraged to discuss homework problems with your classmates, but each student should prepare his or her own set of solutions.

There will be an in-class midterm Wednesday March 3rd, worth 30% of your final grade. An oral project involving some independent inquiry (to be described in class) is also worth 30%. The final exam is scheduled for Wednesday, May 5th from 12:00-1:50PM; it is comprehensive and is worth 40% of your grade. No make-up exams will be given. The College of Arts and Sciences has a policy concerning academic honesty with which you should be familiar.
