We will make use of the course webpage for many aspects of this course. Much of the information on that page will only be available to current students in the class. Furthermore, we will use the web for submitting assignments and for viewing your grades.

For these reasons, we ask that you select credentials for identifying yourself for our course web page. We will rely upon your SLU net ID as username, however we ask that you create a different password for the express purpose of our CSCI-1020 web page.

Academic Background

We ask several questions in order to gather information about familiarity with topics for students entering the class. This will help us in providing adequate support during the semester and perhaps in selecting material to be covered in the course.

As much as possible, we wish to rely on real-world data sets for the experiments and analyses that we do this semester. Fortunately the National Center for Biotechnology Information (NCBI), maintains extensive public databases for a variety of bioinformatic data. Due to its importance (and the convenience of its relatively small size), we will often analyze mitochondrial DNA (aka, mtDNA or mDNA) sequences in this course.

To avoid the appearance that I've pre-arranged specific data to suits my needs, I would like you to help pick the data set we will use (just as a magician might ask audience members to pick something). So your final task for this questionnaire is to pick five specific organisms from NCBI's database of mitochondrial DNA.

Please select as follows:

  1. Navigate to www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/genome/browse#!/organelles/

  2. Expand the "Filter" tab and restrict the Type to "mitochondrian".

  3. At this point you are welcome to pick any five samples that you wish (and can further filter or search if you wish to find your favorites). What I need is the exact NC_ reference number given in the Replicons column of that table.

For example, if you wanted to make a guinea pig our guinea pig, so to speak, you might find Cavia porcellus in their data set, and enter NC_000884.1 as one of your choices below. (But please change that entry below to something of your choosing!)
