You are to write a research report (with length of approximately 1000 words) discussing the history leading to the state of the art in one of the following applications of artificial intelligence. As part of your report, please include systems that are currently in either development or deployment within the most recent two years, where you see the current boundary between what is achievable and what is not, and where you see the most opportunity for further improvement. Give some semblance of the technical challenges that arise in that domain, and any approaches that have been applied successfully. You should also provide references to specific works of research and development, wtih appropriate citations to primary sources of information.

As would be expected for any research project, the report must be in your own words, and you should provide proper citations to any significant sources of information that you use in your research.

Choice of Topics:

• Autonomous automobiles
• Use of facial recognition and video analysis in security
• Medical diagnosis and image analysis
• Recommendation systems (e.g., Netflix, Pandora, targeted advertising)
• Natural language processing (e.g., translations, voice recognition)
• CAPTCHA-like systems for demonstrating humanity
• (if you are interested in some other appliation of AI, ask me if it would be an acceptable topic for this report)
